Post-Construction Cleaning in Lagos: What It Covers and When to Book It

What post-construction cleaning involves, what an after-builders clean should cover, and when to book it before you move into a new or renovated space.

When builders or renovators finish a job, the space is usually complete but far from clean. Fine dust, paint splashes, cement residue and packaging are common, and most of it won’t come off with a quick sweep.

Post-construction cleaning, also called after-builders cleaning, is the detailed clean that makes a new or renovated space ready to live or work in. Below is what it involves, what it should cover and when to arrange it in Lagos.

Why construction dust is so hard to remove

Cutting tiles, drilling, sanding and plastering all produce very fine dust. It drifts well beyond the room where the work happened and settles on every surface, including inside cupboards, on top of door frames, along window tracks and on light fittings.

Because the particles are so fine, they keep resettling. A surface wiped on Monday can be dusty again by Tuesday until the whole space has been cleaned from top to bottom.

Common mess left after building work

  • Paint splashes on floors, windows and fittings.
  • Cement, grout or plaster haze on tiles.
  • Glue marks, protective film and stickers on glass, frames and new fittings.
  • Offcuts, packaging and small debris.

Each of these needs a different method. The wrong scraper or cleaning product can scratch glass, dull new tiles or mark fresh paintwork, so care matters as much as effort.

How a post-construction clean is done

A thorough clean works from top to bottom, starting with ceilings, walls and fittings and finishing with the floors. Dry dust removal normally comes before any wet cleaning, so dust isn’t turned into a paste or knocked onto surfaces that have already been cleaned.

Larger projects may need more than one visit: a first clean to clear the bulk of the dust and debris, then a final detailed clean once the last trades have left.

Post-construction cleaning checklist

A proper after-builders clean should cover:

  • Dust removal from walls, ceilings, fittings and fixtures.
  • Windows, frames and tracks.
  • Floors, including tile and grout haze.
  • Kitchen and bathroom fittings, sinks and worktops.
  • Cupboards, wardrobes and shelves, inside and out.
  • Doors, handles, switches and sockets.
  • Removal of leftover dust and debris.

When to book post-construction cleaning

The best time is after all the work is finished but before furniture and belongings arrive. An empty space is quicker to clean, and nothing new gets covered in dust.

If your project is finishing in phases, you can arrange cleaning room by room so each completed area is ready to use.

For homes, offices and shops

Post-construction cleaning isn’t only for new houses. It applies equally to a renovated flat, an office fit-out or a shop that has just been refurbished. In each case, the space isn’t ready for people until the dust has gone.
